The Fascinating Truth about Boring People
How Seinfeld, Friends, and The Office Revived Curiosity
“But that’s boring!”
These words echo in my ears multiple times a day from one of the sweet, innocent, demanding and impatient voices of my children. The frequency has lessened over the years, however, because they know my response consistently goes like this: “Things are not boring. Bored is a feeling. The problem isn’t [insert my child’s complaint], the problem is you lack imagination and curiosity… and that’s boring.”
Sometimes, on my worse days, I end my retort with “so YOU’RE boring!” They love that…
This may seem to some like an unnecessary debate between me and my 9 year old, but in a world flooded by entertainment devices I cannot think of many lessons more important for me to teach my children than this one: Nothing is inherently boring, anything will prove to be fascinating if you pay closer attention to it.
Think about it. Leaves. Pavement. Clouds. Ants. Paper. Very simple and everyday things, but each of them fascinating when you begin to examine them with the slightest bit of curiosity.
And this is especially true of people’s lives.
A Core Truth that Guides Animo
It could be said that Animo Innovations was built upon the idea, no the truth, that every person has a tremendously fascinating story. It may seem boring to some, or even to the bearer of the story, but if shows like Friends, New Girl, Seinfeld, and The Office taught us anything it is that everyday people and events turn out to be remarkable when you slow down and pay attention.
Every person and organization has a fascinating story worthy of being properly told, enjoyed and connected with by the lives and stories of those around them.
Learning, understanding and then launching these stories into the world excites and motivates every facet of our work.
That’s right… everyday stories excite us.
Because “things” are not boring, and neither YOU nor your story is boring!
That is the fascinating truth about boring people—THERE ARE NONE!
Perhaps you just need someone to tell your story OR someone to whom you can tell it who can reawaken a proper curiosity.
And for us… that’s exciting!
